| Audi Names T-Mobile as the Wireless Carrier for Advanced Audi Connect Systems in the U.S. Posted: 21 Mar 2011 06:03 PM PDT On the heels of AT&T’s purchase of T-Mobile for $39 billion, Audi announces T-Mobile will be the official wireless carrier for its Connect systems. SIM cards will connect you to T-Mobile’s network via the Audi MMI® Navigation Plus system. We love the idea of connectivity in our vehicles but the recent news has us questioning the future of this partnership. Audi today announced that T-Mobile USA, Inc. will serve as the U.S. wireless carrier for its Audi Connect systems in the company’s newest Audi luxury vehicle lines. Available with the arrival of the 2012 Audi A7 in April, the Audi Connect services include voice-activated Google Earth™, Google™ Local Search, and Sirius Traffic™ information combined with Google Earth™ imagery. In addition, Audi Connect allows users to obtain real-time news, weather, and fuel prices from other providers. Audi Connect is also able to turn the vehicle into a secure mobile Wi-Fi hotspot, allowing vehicle passengers to retrieve information on the Internet conveniently and securely. Customers to Tap Voice-activated Google Earth™, Obtain Real-time Traffic, Fuel Price and Weather Information, and Access Mobile Wi-Fi HotSpot Audi Connect services are enabled with an enhanced, ruggedized T-Mobile® SIM card connected to T-Mobile’s robust network inserted into the advanced Audi MMI® Navigation Plus system. To facilitate easy activation, T-Mobile SIM cards will be included with the vehicle, allowing customers to simply sign up for a service plan at the time of vehicle sale or at any time during or after the six-month complimentary trial period. Audi turned to T-Mobile as the wireless provider because of its reliable, nationwide network, leadership in the automotive telematics space, and strong customer satisfaction record. “The launch of Audi Connect is part of a foundational strategy to help Audi lead with first-to-market, cutting-edge connected services,“ said Johan de Nysschen, President, Audi of America. “We’re looking forward to a productive relationship with T-Mobile USA as we give motorists and passengers the ability to access the most current information and enhance their enjoyment of their Audi vehicle.“ “From our robust, nationwide network to our cutting-edge SIM technology, T-Mobile innovates so that customers can connect and access information from nearly anywhere,“ said John Horn, National Director of M2M at T-Mobile USA. “The Audi Connect service is a great example of how the vehicle ownership experience can be enhanced with wireless connectivity and we’re thrilled to be a part of it.“ Availability Related posts: |
| 627hp fire-spitting VW Scirocco from KMS Posted: 21 Mar 2011 05:00 PM PDT Yes, you read all that correctly. HPA’s Scirocco might have a few more ponies but it does not spit fire like KMS’s. Not to spoil it but 45sec’s in is nuts! All we have on it is the horsepower, it’s running 4Motion and Hankook studded tires keep it on the ice… Ya ICE! Those vids after the jump Related posts: |
| SHIFT 2 Unleashed: Tommy Milner’s Hot Lap of Laguna Seca Posted: 21 Mar 2011 01:36 PM PDT UNREAL! We’ve watched this about 50x and still can’t get over it. Real game footage here, not 3D renders. Volume up, kick back and enjoy. Oh, and pre-order Tommy Milner takes a shot in the D-BOX chair in SHIFT 2 Unleashed going around Laguna Seca in his Chevrolet Corvette C6.R GT1 with no driving assists. Related posts: |
| Video: Audi R18 TDI testing at Sebring today Posted: 21 Mar 2011 12:00 PM PDT Think Audi sits back and swims in sorrow after their loss during Saturday’s 12 Hours of Sebring? Wrong. While everyone was wishing to see the R18 TDI race, it would not happen due to new rules etc. The R15++ had to fit the bill. Little did they all know, two R18′s were right there! The Fourtitude was able to hang out today and capture the R18 TDI running laps. Ominous stealth like appearance and sound! Peugeot, you’re done. Related posts: |

| Porsche 12 Hours of Sebring report Posted: 21 Mar 2011 06:26 AM PDT
At the Sebring 12 hour race, Porsche took off into the 2011 season of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup and the American Le Mans Series by clinching second place in the new GTE-AM class. Sharing the cockpit of the Porsche 911 GT3 RSR fielded by Proton Competition was Porsche works driver Richard Lietz (Austria) with his teammates Christian Ried (Germany) and Gianluca Roda (Italy). “Our car ran well until we experienced some clutch problems towards the end of the race,” said Richard Lietz. “The new GTE-AM class, in which only one professional driver is permitted per vehicle, is very interesting. As always, the Sebring event was huge fun. My driver colleagues drove consistent times and didn’t make one error.” In the GT class of the American Le Mans Series, Porsche works drivers Joerg Bergmeister (Germany) and Patrick Long (USA) claimed sixth place. At the wheel of the Flying Lizard Motorsports 911 GT3 RSR, the title defenders found themselves a lap down early on in the race run in hot temperatures after Patrick Long received a one minute stop-and-go penalty for a collision. Later on, a hose on Joerg Bergmeister’s cooling vest came loose and the leaking water caused misfiring, making an unscheduled pit stop necessary. Through this, they lost another lap to the front-runners. “The opposition is so strong this year that you simply can’t make up such a shortfall. In this respect, I’m quite satisfied with sixth place,” said Joerg Bergmeister. “We experienced bad luck today and I hope that we’ll be able to balance things out over the course of the season.” Despite putting in a strong drive with Team Falken’s Porsche 911 GT3 RSR, Porsche factory pilot Wolf Henzler (Germany) and his teammates Martin Ragginger (Austria) and Bryan Sellers (USA) were not rewarded with a good result. The new squad under Derrick Walker made an impressive debut in the American Le Mans Series, and worked highly professionally with excellent pit stops at their first race outing. Over long stretches, their 911 GT3 RSR was the fastest Porsche in the field, but did not reach the finish line due to gearbox problems. “Our teamwork went very well,” said Wolf Henzler. “Above all, we’ve made huge progress with the tires compared to last year. We can build on this over the rest of the season.” In the second Porsche 911 GT3 RSR of Flying Lizard Motorsports, Porsche works driver Marco Holzer (Germany) and his American teammates Seth Neiman and Darren Law saw the flag in seventh place. “Obviously, we imagined our start to the season differently,” said Porsche head of motorsport, Hartmut Kristen. “Still, sixth place for Flying Lizard Motorsports and the corresponding championship points are very important for a successful title defense. Sadly, the collision with a competitor, the leaking cooling vest and the resulting electrical problems prevented a better result. Congratulations to the Proton Competition squad for their second place at the premiere of the GTE-AM class. The other Porsche teams also performed excellently at this extremely competitive race.” Victory in the GTC class for one-make series vehicles went to Tim Pappas (USA), Sebastiaan Bleekemolen (NL) and Damien Faulkner (IRL) in the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. Round 2 of the American Le Mans Series will run on 16 April on the street circuit of Long Beach in the US State of California. | Porsche 918 Spyder hybrid super sports car is a go Posted: 21 Mar 2011 06:03 AM PDT
Today is the day that Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, puts on sale the 918 Spyder super sports car with its innovative plug-in hybrid drive. Production development is proceeding apace in the wake of the outstanding customer response to the concept car unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show 2010. Thanks to its unique hybrid technology, the 918 Spyder is estimated to consume a mere three litres of fuel per 100 kilometres (94 mpg imp.) based on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). Its V8 engine delivers more than 368 kW (500 hp), assisted by two electric motors with a total of at least 160 kW (218 hp). The 918 Spyder is available for immediate order priced from 645,000 Euro – subject to VAT and country-specific charges. To ensure a 918 Spyder’s exclusivity, the two-seater is limited to no more than 918 units. The earlier a customer orders his vehicle, the earlier it will be delivered, as production is initialized in the same sequence in which orders are received. Production of the 918 Spyder is scheduled to commence on 18 September 2013 – 9/18 in US date convention – in a quasi manufacturing operation at Porsche’s main plant in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen. Delivery of the initial vehicles will commence in November 2013.
The design’s DNA is derived from the Carrera GT and Porsche 917 sports car as well as the RS Spyder and is very closely modelled on the 2010 concept car. Unlike the concept car, however, the production version of the two-seater, based on a carbon fibre-reinforced plastic monocoque, features a manual roof system with removable roof panels that can be stowed in the front luggage compartment. The 918 Spyder is driven by a unique type of plug-in hybrid system. It comprises a high-revving V8 engine with a displacement exceeding four litres and output of more than 368 kW (500 hp). The mid-engine power unit is based on the racing engine of the successful Porsche RS Spyder, which provided impressive proof of its efficiency with its multiple victories in the Michelin Green X Challenge in the American Le Mans Series, the Le Mans Series and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Power transmission to the rear wheels is by means of a compact, seven gear Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK). This is complemented by two electric motors – one each on the front and rear axle – with a joint mechanical output of at least 160 kW (218 hp). This configuration offers an innovative, variable all-wheel drive with independent control of the propulsion force on both axles. The energy storage unit is a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery that can be charged from a conventional domestic power socket, delivering a range in excess of 25 km (16 miles) in the NEDC on purely electric power. The charging time depends on the country-specific mains network, being approximately three hours in Germany, for example. A quick charging option is planned to reduce charging time yet further.
The 918 Spyder’s combined total fuel consumption in the NEDC (ECE-R 101) is anticipated to be 3.0 l/100 km (94 mpg imp.), equating to CO2 emissions of 70 g/km (112 g/mile). Despite that, the super sports car offers performance of the highest order. It accelerates from a standing start to 100 km/h (62 mph) in a maximum of 3.2 seconds and has a top speed of more than 320 km/h (199 mph). That means the Spyder will be able to manage a lap of the Nürburgring Nordschleife in less than seven minutes and 30 seconds – trumping the Porsche Carrera GT, which needs seven minutes and 32 seconds. The top speed on purely electric power is 150 km/h (94 mph). To shorten the time the customer has to wait for the 918 Spyder, Porsche is offering everyone placing an order the exclusive opportunity to acquire a 911 Turbo S “Edition 918 Spyder”, also limited to no more than 918 units. Visually, both inside and out, the special edition is inspired by the 918 Spyder’s characteristic individual features. That includes the distinctive acid green features such as the specific and part-embroidered model logos and seams, the instrument cluster needles, the specific PCM screen and illuminated door entry guards. The limited edition badge on the glove compartment lid bears the same number as the 918 Spyder the customer has ordered. The 911 Turbo S “Edition 918 Spyder” can also be ordered in the same colour. Both the technology and basic equipment of the new 911 Turbo S “Edition 918 Spyder” are based on the 530 hp (295 kW) 911 Turbo S. In the case of the special edition, the already comprehensive standard equipment is complemented in particular by an enhanced leather interior, a special instrumentation version and additional carbon elements both inside and out. The 911 Turbo S “Edition 918 Spyder” is being offered to coincide with the commencement of sales of the 918 Spyder with deliveries starting in June 2011. The Coupé version of the special edition costs 173,241 Euro in Germany and 184,546 Euro as a Cabriolet – including VAT and country-specific equipment items respectively. -Porsche Related posts: |
