Rolls Royce Phantom Electric Experimental Vehicle Rolls Royce Phantom Electric 1

Rolls Royce released new details and images of the Phantom Electric Experimental Vehicle, called the 102EX, as the car take the stage by storm at the Geneva Motor Show.

The idea of an electric car seems to be at front with everything Rolls Royce stands for, because to be honest the whole point of an EV is economy and saving money! But they eventually have to do something about the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of their products and developing hybrid and electric powertrains seem inevitable.

RR says this Phantom is just a testbed for the yet in development electric drivetrain. It will undertake a global test programme that takes in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and North America. Through test drives, owners will be given the opportunity to experience an alternative drive-train technology and to feed back their experiences, thoughts and concerns directly to Rolls-Royce.

Hamann BMW X6M Tycoon Evo M Hamann Tycoon Evo X6M 1

So far we’ve seen Hamann’s SLS Hawk and Cayenne Guardian at the Geneva Motor Show. But there’s one more car at their booth that is worth a look at. Of course, it’s not like you may miss such a gigantic thing!

We’re talking about the Hamann BMW X6M Tycoon Evo M. The car gets the same sort of widebody kit at the Cayenne, but while it really suits the Porsche, BMW’s kit is not all that brilliant. Still, if you just want to turn heads it’ll do the job pretty well.

Like the previous Tycoon kits, this Evo M  features revised bumpers which at front has Hamann’s signature spoiler lip, new LED lights, and a carbon fiber bonnet with vents in it. This car is 60m wider than the standard because of those massively flared arches and the new side skirts. At the back, Hamann replaces the original apron with a new own development which provides spaces for the earthy sounds produced by the sports exhaust system with centre double end pipes.

The car, as usua, is bolted up with UNIQUE FORGED ANODIZED 23 inch wheels in 11.0 x 23 at the front axle and 12.0 x 23 at the rear axle with tyres sized 315/25 R 23.

The 555hp biturbo V8 engine of the X6M also gets modified. It gets a titanium high-performance exhaust system, and remapped ECU that has no speed limiter as well. It now churns out 670 hp / 493 kW at 6,000 r.p.m. and 950 Newton metres torque at 1,500 – 5,650 r.p.m. You can use that power to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds and reach a tops peed of 300 km/h. That’s astonishing for a car that weighs as much as the moon!

In addition to the serial interior, Hamann offers applications made of exotic nanai salmon leather. This natural products which is exclusively used by Hamann, combines the characteristic structure of salmon skin with the qualities of conventional interior leathers. Uprated suspension and much bigger rakes are other parts of the Evo M X6M.

Mitsubishi e compact Global Small Car Mitsubishi e compact 1

The competition in the B-segment is really hotting up. Mitsubishi is the next car maker to release details of their contender as the Globlal Small Platform called the e-compact.

This concept is only a preview of the real car, which will be unveiled in production form towards the end of this year, prior to a start of production scheduled for early 2012. This small car is 3.7 meters long and 1.7 meters wide and can be powered by a range of 1.0 and 1.2 liter MIVEC engine equipped with Auto Stop and start system and regenerative braking technology and 185/55 R 16 low rolling resistance tires.

In spite of its small size, the e-compact can accommodate five adults inside the cabin. This concept will be the base for the next generation Mitsubishi Colt.

Global product of the “Global Village” This new Mitsubishi will be proposed as an entry model for emerging markets as well as a fuel efficient car in developed markets. As such, this all-new e-compact project shall be MMC’s answer to some fundamental evidences. With 80% of its total output bound for export, Mitsubishi Motors ought to take into consideration the trend towards globalization in trade and communications, no matter the market segment.

Mitsubishi e compact Global Small Car Mitsubishi e compact 2

Mitsubishi e-compact:

“e-” for…
Developed in Okazaki (Japan) – MMC’s global R&D Center – in less than 2 years, the forthcoming Global Small project is meant to merge all these “eco/compact” requirements into one single package designed as such instead of mere adaptation(s):

“e” for “efficiency”: highly efficient in its overall packaging, Mitsubishi Motors’ e-compact combines the virtues of a small vehicle (manoeuvrability,…) and excellent visibility whilst sitting 5 adults in comfort and accommodating sufficient luggage space within a retrained footprint (3,74 m length x 1,68 m width): one of the most space efficient in the B-Segment.

“e” for “engineering”: the architecture this e-compact is based upon has been designed to accommodate upfront foreseeable customer and regulatory requirements in ALL world markets whether Japan, North America, emerging countries or Europe, instead of costly later adaptations: a first in the small car class.

“e” for “environment”: through weight saving measures, all-new petrol 1.0 and 1.2 liter MIVEC powertrains, the application of MMC’s green technology solutions (Auto Stop and Go, Brake energy regenerative system,, etc,…) and fine-tuned aerodynamics as exemplified in the sloping roof line, Mitsubishi’s e-compact can boast sensible level of fuel consumption and therefore emissions well in line with market trends.

“e” for “electric vehicle”: as a further environmentally friendly measure – and a direct effect of its fully integrated Global Small architecture – e-compact is engineered to accommodate a further variant, fitted with a 100% electric powertrain.

“e” for ” economies”: robust and reliable by design as customary for Japanese products, “Global Small” should also guarantee low running costs.
“e” for “effective design”: as a daily reliable runabout equally at ease crossing the bush, tackling megapole traffic or blasting highways (within speed limits), the Mitsubishi e-compact was styled with no-nonsense efficiency-first in mind. Robust looking yet enjoying sophisticated aerodynamics, it should grace traffic nonetheless with a friendly face.

“e” for “export”: the first of its kind, “Global Small” will be built at MMC’s dedicated hub of Laem Chabang Industrial Estate in the Chonburi province of Thailand. The forecasted annual volume of 150,000 units (with a possible increase to 200,000 units) will be exported to the ASEAN countries , Japan, North Asia, Australasia, Europe, North America and many other markets around the world.

2011 Geneva Motor Show was the place for the new Toyota Prius Plus full Hybrid MPV. This new addition to the Prius family will be the most economical and cleanest seven-seat MPV when it goes on sale in Europe in 2012.

The new Prius is a more practical and comfortable version of the eco car suitable for family use. Prius+ provides a significant increase in space and passenger accommodation compared to its sister hatchback model.

There are three independent, split-folding second row seats and a 50:50 split-folding third row. In spite of the increase in size, it retains the fundamental performance benefits associated with Prius, including the lowest fuel consumption of any seven-seater on the market.

the exterior design of the car is based on the normal Prius and with Cd 0.29 drag coefficient it is more functional than pretty. highlights of it include trapezoidal front end incorporates sharp-edged headlamps, flat, vertical 'aero' corners that reduce air turbulence, and an enlarged lower grille to improve aerodynamics and engine cooling. The rear of the car features a top-hinged tailgate, intricate lamp clusters and a roof spoiler that further manages smooth airflow.

Toyota Yaris HSD Hybrid Revealed Toyota Yaris HSD Hybrid 1

Toyota is bringing their hybrid technology to the B-segment with the Yaris HSD Concept unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show. This concept will spawn a production model in 2012.

This car is part of Toyota's goal is to offer full hybrid power in all its models in Europe as early as possible in the 2020s, a programme which began in 2010 with launch of Auris HSD in the C-segment. They are not yet preapre to give us the exact eco figures of the Yaris Hybrid, but they say it will offer class-leading fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, plus low cost of ownership.

Toyota sees a growing demand for small clean cars in the B-segment and the Yaris HSD is a proper respond to that need. It offers the same qualities as a normal hatchback with zero or very little emissions.

Toyota Yaris HSD Hybrid Revealed Toyota Yaris HSD Hybrid 2

Toyota Yaris HSD Details:

Exterior design – a new direction for the next Yaris
The Yaris HSD concept inherits the clever packaging that has historically been a fundamental of element of Yaris, with a spacious and practical interior married to a more advanced and sophisticated exterior design.

The upper grille opening is shallow, flanked by highly contoured headlamps, promoting a smooth airflow over the upper body. The Toyota emblem is fully integrated into the front lip of the bonnet.

In profile, the car's monoform shape is emphasised by a long, sweeping roofline and single, crisp character line running the length of the vehicle. Short front and rear overhangs and a long wheelbase maximise the room inside for passengers and luggage.

There are a number of styling cues that identify the car as a Toyota full hybrid. Flat, vertical 'aero' corners minimise air turbulence and house front foglamps and matching rear reflectors. Airflow is also managed by a large, integral rear spoiler, underbody covers and 18-inch aero wheels with enlarged gaps to promote cooling. Attention to detail extends to the aero-efficient shape of the door handles and rear side view cameras (featured in place of conventional door mirrors).

The hybrid-specific white pearl paintwork is exclusive to the concept car and shows off a new development of this finish, with sparkling blue metallic accents created using multi-layering application techniques. The car's Hybrid Synergy Drive is further indicated by hybrid blue Toyota badging, LED daytime running lights and 'synergy' blue illumination of the rear-view camera housings and doorhandles.

Hybrid Synergy Drive in the B-segment
Fuel efficiency and low CO2 emissions are established attractive qualities in the B-segment. Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive will carry these forward with the additional benefit of offering fully electric driving capability – a function that is particularly effective in urban environments.

In all-electric EV mode the system produces zero CO2, NOx and particulates tailpipe emissions.

Every Toyota full hybrid comes with low cost of ownership built-in. The high fuel efficiency and low emissions save on fuel bills, attract tax benefits and inner city congestion charge exemptions and keep running costs down. Moreover, Hybrid Synergy Drive is designed for low maintenance requirements and hard-wearing performance. The system has no starter motor or alternator, the timing chain is maintenance-free and there are no drive belts, which improves reliability and saves on upkeep bills.

Toyota engineers continue to focus on how overall system performance can be improved by capturing solar power. Yaris HSD's roof is entirely covered with solar panels, to provide independent powering of the car's air conditioning unit, thus reducing fuel consumption.

HSD powertrain downsizing – the engineering challenge
Introducing full hybrid technology to the B-segment has presented Toyota with some unique engineering challenges. The powertrain design has to be tailored for installation within Yaris's compact and extremely efficient packaging, without compromising its quality and performance, or detracting from the passenger accommodation and loadspace. Success in this task is essential to meet the growing demand for urban-friendly family vehicles, in which space and the benefits of hybrid performance are prime requirements.

European production
The production model which will follow the Yaris HSD concept will be launched throughout Europe during the second half of 2012. Cars will be built at Toyota Motor Manufacturing France's Valenciennes plant.

Renault R Space Concept Revealed

Renault R Space Concept Revealed Renault R Space 1

Before unveiling it at the Geneva Motor Show Renault didn’t talk about the R Concept at all. But now it’s fully revealed trying to convince you that people carriers don’t have to be dull and boring.

The R Space is designed to combine qualities long considered opposed: family, functionality, sportiness and sensuality. So it gets a flowing sporty body design with large windscreen and panoramic roof, large wheels, and an overall athletic profile. It follows the same design language as the DeZir and Captur concepts. They say it is inspired by the human body!

Another highlight of the R Space’s design is the double doors which, unobstructed by any central pillar, give clear access to a spectacular interior designed to trigger strong emotions from the very first glance.

In terms of interior design, the family likeness to the DeZir concept car is clearly visible at the front in the forms of the dashboard and seats. The driver enjoys a cockpit-like environment, with a section of the seemingly floating dashboard being specifically dedicated to driving functions. The interlinking movement suggested by the shaping of the front seat backrests is a return to the idea of a couple in love! Renault is still being emotional with the design of their cars.

The concept car also has a three-cylinder concept-engine. This 900cc Renault-Nissan unit with an automatic EDC double clutch gearbox delivers peak power of 110hp/80kW and 160Nm of torque. Its CO2 emissions have been kept to just 95g/km, equivalent to fuel consumption of just 3.7 litres/100km.

Renault R Space features:

* The Energy TCe Concept engine is an illustration not only of Renault's strategy of downsizing, but also of the package of innovative fuel-saving, emissions-reducing technologies that will be introduced on the company's next-generation engines. On the list are technologies such as direct fuel-injection, radio-frequency spark plugs, an EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) Boost system, a pulse Stop&Start system – and even a variable-displacement oil pump. In addition to work aimed at minimising internal friction, these measures have achieved a very significant reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions without sacrificing performance.
* The combustion system, too, has received special attention, with variable camshaft timing and the effect of the improved compact manifold integrating the turbo giving excellent acceleration response, especially at low rpm.
* Direct petrol injection: fuel is injected at high pressure directly into the combustion chamber. In combination with the radio frequency spark plugs, which boost the size of the spark (up to 1,000 times bigger than with a conventional system), the injection system raises combustion to the highest level of efficiency. This breakthrough in ignition technology has been developed in collaboration with BorgWarner Beru Systems.
* As is the case with certain diesel engines, including the new dCi 130, EGR Boost technologycaptures the exhaust gases after they have passed through the turbocharger and after-treatment system. Cooled in a heat exchanger before being reintroduced into the air upstream of the turbo, these gases then follow the charge-air cooling circuit before entering the combustion chamber to dilute the fuel-air mixture. On petrol engines, this technique helps reduce combustion temperatures, thereby boosting the compression ratio and reducing CO2 emissions.
* Pulse start: thanks in particular to the direct injection, this technology allows the ultra-rapid stopping and restarting of the engine when the vehicle is stationary.
* The variable-displacement oil pump regulates the throughput of oil in line with the precise requirements of the engine, thus limiting the energy consumed by the pump. Efforts to reduce frictional losseshave focused particularly closely on the 12 cam followers, timing chain and piston skirts.
* A thermal management system, finally, helps the engine warm up more rapidly following a cold start. With the oil reaching its optimum viscosity more quickly, internal friction is reduced.

Fiat 500 Coupe Zagato

Posted: 01 Mar 2011 08:31 AM PST

Fiat 500 Coupe Zagato 500 Coupe Zagato 1

Italian designer Zagato and Fiat Centro Stile have teamed up to create the “500 Coupe Zagato”. This special 500 unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, is inspired by the namesake predecessor built in the 1950.

Even though the design of the car is revamped, but it is still very easy to mistake it with an ordinary 500! The highlights of the car is the unique shape of the roof with the characteristic "double hump" which is Zagato’s signature. It also has the classic "2+2 seater" formula, retaining the compact dimensions of the basic model at 355 centimetres long, 163 cm wide and 149 cm high, with a 230 centimetre wheelbase.

The Zagato 500 is powered by the two-cylinder TwinAir 105 HP engine that has received many praises regarding its great “driving fun” factor! In addition, at 124 HP/litre, this engine is also one of the world leaders in specific power. All while ensuring reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions unrivalled in this category: 95 g/km.

Fiat 500 Coupe Zagato 500 Coupe Zagato 2

The same styling effect can be found in the interiors, specifically the seats, inspired by the traditional sporty "diamond" seats and high-tech fabric teamed with yellow chamois leather and the black natural leather of the surrounds which give it a young, contemporary look. The decidedly sporty appearance can also be found on the steering wheel – also covered in leather with contrasting stitching the same colour as the yellow chamois leather grips – and on the dashboard surround, matching the exterior colour, which was treated in burnished "eco-chrome" to give it a more aggressive appeal. Lastly, another typical feature of coupe vehicles is the lining of the roof panel with dark high-tech fabric embellished by a transparent single-filament yarn that gives it a delicate shine.

In perfect synch with its sporty personality, the "500 Coupe Zagato" features burnished chrome exterior elements, 17? "chrome shadow" wheels with a brand new double spoked shape and synthetic inserts (made of APP-TECH), 205/40 R17 tyres and 4 perforated brake discs.

Amongst all of the amazing cars revealed at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, we liked the Jaguar XKR-S best of all! This hardened more powerful version of the XKR GT is the best version of the car, and a very very cool car.

Now Jaguar released full details and specs of the car, as well as its pricing which is £97,000 when ordering opens in September. The car is powered by an uprated supercharged AJ-V8 Gen III R direct-injection engine produces 550PS and 680Nm of torque. This power means it can go as fast as 300 kph with 0-60mph reached in just 4.2 seconds.

Others features of this car we should mention before getting into the details include active sports exhaust delivers an authentic, race-car inspired soundtrack, lightweight advanced aluminium body architecture to maximise performance, agility and economy, bespoke suspension changes front and rear for ultimate precision, control and driver appeal, unique styling which is more of a facelift really, revised interior with 16-way adjustable memory sports seats with carbon-fibre effect leather, and…

Now buckle up for an extensive tour of the XKR-S. Everything you want to know about this super Jag is mentioned here!

Jaguar XKR S Details and Specs Jaguar XKR S 2

Introduction

Making its debut at the Geneva Motor Show 2011, the XKR-S is the most extreme expression yet of Jaguar's passion for building beautiful, fast cars. For the first time with a series production car, Jaguar gains entry to the exclusive '300kph club' thanks to the effortless performance of the supercharged 5.0-litre AJ-V8 engine. A revised fuelling map means the direct-injection powerplant now produces 550PS and 680Nm of torque. Extensive recalibration has ensured that power delivery and performance are seamless, contributing to a 0-60mph time of 4.2 seconds. The Performance active exhaust encourages and rewards the enthusiastic driver with dramatic, motorsport-inspired aural feedback.

The XKR-S is not merely the quickest Jaguar ever but also the most agile, responsive and driver-focused. The pinnacle of the XK range builds on feedback gathered from the supercharged XKR and has been developed to extend the performance parameters of the car. This new harder-edged character allows the enthusiastic driver to explore the outer limits of the car's dynamics without losing the refinement and usability for which Jaguar is famous. The structural integrity of the lightweight aluminium platform allowed the suspension to be reworked with bespoke components for increased stiffness without a commensurate loss in either refinement or Jaguar's legendary ride comfort. A reworked aluminium front suspension knuckle and revised rear geometry are allied to stiffer springs and dampers, lightweight forged alloy wheels and recalibrated steering effort to minimise any response delays and produce a more connected and agile driving experience.

Jaguar XKR S Details and Specs Jaguar XKR S 3

The performance of the XKR-S is reflected in both its interior and exterior styling, which feature exclusive new paint colours that reflect Jaguar's racing heritage. As with competition Jaguars of the past, the exterior of the XKR-S adheres to the principle of form following function. In addition to the styling changes and in order for it to achieve 300kph, the XKR-S was the subject of extensive Computational Fluid Dynamics development work. The resulting changes reduced front and rear lift by more than a quarter and optimised lateral aerodynamic stability.

The performance intent of the XKR-S is clear from the moment the driver enters the cabin thanks to new cosseting Performance seats with prominent shoulder wings for close support during hard cornering. The seats feature 16-way adjustment, memory and heating functions while a new three-spoke steering wheel provides the perfect interface between car and driver.

Styling

  • Unique, new front-end design with twin nacelles, side intakes and carbon-fibre splitter.
  • Extended side sills emphasising the 10mm lower ride height.
  • New rear apron incorporating a carbon-fibre diffuser.
  • Unique to the XKR-S is a rear wing with carbon-fibre centre section.

Ian Callum, Design Director, Jaguar Cars: "The styling of this car isn't about image, it's about true performance. Like other iconic Jaguars before it, the styling has been driven by geometry and aerodynamics for genuine design purity. The physics required to achieve 300kph have led the aesthetic; if you don't like the way it looks, you probably won't like the way it drives either."

Jaguar XKR S Details and Specs Jaguar XKR S 4

The first Jaguar designed entirely under the aegis of Design Director Ian Callum, the XK has received awards worldwide for its elegant appearance. Now further styling changes keep the XKR-S at the forefront of modern sports car design. Slimmer, LED headlights, more compact main air intake and vertical side power vent all contribute to a more purposeful front-end appearance. At the rear of the car the famous Jaguar 'Leaper' now takes pride of place in the centre of the bootlid.

The XKR-S also required aerodynamic modifications to achieve its 300kph top speed in the unruffled manner expected of a Jaguar and has been designed solely with an eye for purity of line and singularity of purpose. As the XKR-S approaches its top speed, there is a requirement to channel air cleanly over, around and under the car in order to maintain stability and ensure balanced downforce front and rear. An overall reduction in lift of 26 per cent has been achieved.

The necessary revisions were made after extensive Computational Fluid Dynamics work, proven through wind tunnel testing and are unique to this flagship of the XK range. The most dramatic changes have been applied to the front of the car, radically altering its appearance and lending it a more assertive look. A new bumper design features near vertical feature lines running down from the edges of the oval air intake and supporting the new carbon-fibre splitter and lower spoiler. At the extreme edges of the front fenders, vertical slots channel air down the sides of the car and along the wider sills for increased high-speed directional stability.

In order to balance front and rear lift, the XKR-S features a separate rear wing, a first for the XK range. This addition, with its carbon-fibre centre section, works in concert with the similarly constructed Venturi structure underneath the rear bumper.

Jaguar XKR S Details and Specs Jaguar XKR S 5

The assertive new appearance of the XKR-S is subtly highlighted by some carefully chosen details exclusive to this model. Exterior trim is finished in gloss black, complemented by 20-inch Vulcan lightweight forged alloys in a dark technical finish.

The XKR-S is available in a range of five paint colours, two of which evoke Jaguar's competition heritage: Italian Racing Red and French Racing Blue.

Like the lining of a bespoke suit, the finishing touch is provided by the brake calipers, available in either red or gunmetal and emblazoned with the 'Jaguar' name.

Performance/Powertrain

  • Third generation of the award-winning AJ-V8 all-aluminium powerplant with twin-vortex Roots-type supercharger.
  • Revising the fuelling map boosts power and torque to 550PS and 680Nm.
  • Spray-guided direct injection delivers precisely measured quantities of fuel into the cylinder heads at 150bar.
  • Variable timing system on all four camshafts features actuation rates of more than 150 degrees per second.

Russ Varney, Chief Programme Engineer, XK: "With the XKR-S we have exploited the inherent capabilities of the aluminium architecture to its fullest extent to create a track-capable performance derivative extending all car's attributes and delivering an irresistible 'smile of satisfaction' response from the driver."

Astonishing engines have always formed the strongly beating heart of Jaguar's road and race cars from the record-setting straight-six in the XK120 to the smooth V12 that made the XJ12 the fastest four-door in the world when it was launched.

Jaguar XKR S Details and Specs Jaguar XKR S 6

The AJ-V8 joined this illustrious list from the moment the first one was fired into life but in the XKR-S it is presented in its most potent form to date. Now in its third generation and with the addition of supercharging, the all-aluminium quad-cam powerplant delivers not only extreme performance but also tremendous efficiency thanks to the technologies incorporated into it, including spray-guided direct injection (SGDI) and dual independent variable cam timing (DIVCT).

Fuel is delivered directly to the centre of the combustion chambers at a pressure of up to 150bar by the centrally-mounted six-hole spray-guided injection system in order to maximise fuel-air mixing and improve responsiveness, particularly at low speeds. It has also allowed an increase in compression ratio from 9.1:1 to 9.5:1 to improve fuel economy while multiple injections reduce the warm up phase to increase catalyst efficiency and reduce emissions.

Each of the four camshafts features a variable timing system which rather than being controlled by oil pressure, are activated by the positive and negative torques generated by the movement of the intake and outlet valves, allowing for a smaller, more efficient oil pump to be fitted, further reducing fuel consumption. The VCT units respond up to three times faster than previously with actuation rates of more than 150 degrees per second at every point in the speed range, making this the most responsive engine Jaguar has ever built, with no gaps in its power delivery.

Like the car itself, the AJ-V8 features aluminium architecture with the high pressure die-cast lightweight block augmented by cast iron liners and cross-bolted main bearing caps which contribute to refinement to match its power. The four-valve cylinder heads are now constructed from recycled aluminium to reduce the environmental impact of engine manufacture.

Nestling in the 'V' of the cylinders is the Roots-type twin vortex supercharger and its two intercoolers that help provide the XKR-S with such urgent motive power. This sixth-generation forced induction unit is 20 per cent more thermodynamically efficient than its predecessor, while the intercoolers feature their own water-cooling circuit to reduce the temperature of the pressurised air to optimise power and efficiency.

Jaguar XKR S Details and Specs Jaguar XKR S 7

The surfeit of power produced by this system meant that it was a relatively simple matter to liberate an extra 40PS and 55Nm over the standard XKR. Remapping the engine's fuelling characteristics and increasing exhaust gas flow through the use of an active exhaust system has lifted total output of the 5.0-litre V8 is now 550PS and 680Nm, making it the most powerful Jaguar road engine ever made and allowing the XKR-S to hit 60mph in 4.2 seconds and breach the magical 300kph barrier with ease.

The Performance active exhaust system that helps provide such spirited performance also produces a thrilling motorsport-inspired soundtrack to aurally reward the enthusiastic driver.

Handling

  • Incredibly light and rigid with a kerb weight of 1753kg and torsional stiffness of 28,400N per degree
  • New aluminium front knuckle increases stiffness by 0.13 Deg/kN
  • Front and rear spring rates increased by 28 per cent
  • New 20" Vulcan wheels and Pirelli P-Zero tyres reduce unsprung mass by 4.8kg
  • Rewritten stability control software optimises the system for enthusiastic driving
  • Jaguar High Performance Braking System fitted as standard

Mike Cross, Chief Engineer, Vehicle Integrity: "This car encompasses everything a performance Jaguar should be; as capable, precise and thrilling on a wet Welsh B-road as it is at the Nürburgring. Every response delay has been minimised in order to give the car a more connected feel in the manner in which it steers, handles, stops and goes."

Jaguar pioneered the use of aluminium construction for series production cars, exploiting the metal's low mass and high tensile strength to maximise benefits in terms of performance, agility, fuel consumption and emissions.

The platform underpinning the XK range makes the car one of the lightest and most rigid in its class with a kerb weight of 1753kg and torsional stiffness of 28,400 Newtons per degree. This fundamental strength allowed Jaguar's Vehicle Integrity team, led by Mike Cross, to develop the dynamic attributes of the XKR-S to the full, without affecting refinement. Every Jaguar achieves an unrivalled mix of sporting appeal and luxurious comfort and the XKR-S is the most driver focused Jaguar ever made.

Jaguar XKR S Details and Specs Jaguar XKR S 8

Taking the solid foundation of the aluminium architecture as a starting point, both front and rear suspension systems have been upgraded. The double wishbone front suspension has been comprehensively revised with a new aluminium steering knuckle that significantly increases camber and castor stiffness by 0.13 degrees per Kilonewton to transform the accuracy and weighting of the steering for greater levels of connection, feedback and precision. The Active Differential Control has been reprogrammed to reduce steering sensitivity at the very high speeds of which the car is capable, increasing stability and driver control.

Rear suspension geometry has been revised with rear wheel steer optimised for maximum agility while spring rates have been increased at both ends of the car by 28 per cent. Bespoke software for Jaguar's Adaptive Damping has been written for the XKR-S, ensuring both total body control and maximum traction and grip.

Wheel sizes have been increased with the unique lightweight forged Vulcan 20-inch alloys now having a width of nine inches at the front and 10.5-inches at the rear for greater precision and grip. The new wheels wear Pirelli P Zero tyres measuring 255/35 R20 at the front, 295/35 R20 at the rear. This combination has reduced overall unsprung mass by 4.8kg with a commensurate improvement in handling and dynamism.

The Dynamic Stability Control System has been reworked to maximise the benefit of these wider tyres. In Trac DSC mode this utilises specific traction, stability and eDiff settings to alter slip thresholds, differential torque distribution and intervention levels to allow the experienced driver to explore the outer edges of the performance and handling envelope.

The XKR-S is equipped as standard with Jaguar's High Performance Braking System. Lighter and more powerful, this features cast iron and part aluminium monobloc calipers for a combination of power, stability and feel. The brake discs – measuring 380mm at the front and 376mm at the rear – are internally ventilated to provide repeated, fade-free stopping power. In combination with pad surface increases of 44 per cent front and 31 per cent rear the system provides total security and confidence on both road and track. Stopping distance from 124mph has been improved by 2.7 per cent over the already impressive XKR.

Interior

The cabin of any Jaguar is always a uniquely special place in which to spend time and the XKR-S meets all expectations from the moment the driver enters to be greeted by the red Start button pulsing like a heartbeat. When pressed, the engine fires with an rich, deep reverberation and the Jaguar Drive Selector rises from the centre console as a point of first contact to begin the process of bonding man with machine.

The interior of the XKR-S has been subtly refreshed with a host of new trim materials including ebony soft-feel paint for the switches and gloss black finish to the centre console. The model will also be exclusively available with a Dark Linear Aluminium finish as an option to the wood veneers.

A new leather-wrapped, multi-function steering wheel has also been added, providing a beautiful, tactile interface between car and driver as do the bright, Jaguar-embossed, stainless steel pedals.

Exclusive to the XKR-S are the new Performance front seats with an integrated head restraints and increased lateral and squab support to hold driver and passenger securely and comfortably in place during the high speed cornering of which this car is capable. The 16-way adjustment of squab, cushion, lumbar and bolster elements is supplemented by memory and heating functions.

The sense of occasion offered when driving the XKR-S will be heightened by the new carbon leather accents covering the seats, featuring unique contrast micro-piping and stitching combinations in Reims Blue, Red and Ivory. Wiesmann Spyder Concept Revealed Wiesmann Spyder Concept 1

German bespoke sports car maker Wiesmann released the pictures of their new Spyder Concept on display at the Geneva Motor Show. And, it’s weirdo!

As Wiesmann says it is a design study of a two-seater, extremely purist, convertible sports. But that can’t justify the horrifying looks of of the car. I mean it can make children cry!

Technically though, it’s brilliant. Wiesmann hasn’t released much details about it yet, but they do reveal that it is a proper performance machine with a weight of under 1000 kg, top speed of above 290 km/h, and a 0 to 100 km/h sprint of under 4 seconds.

Wiesmann will asses the reactions to the Spyder at the Geneva show and then makes the decision if they should put it into production. Even if they make it, it won’t be sooner than 2012.

Saab PhoeniX Concept

Posted: 01 Mar 2011 07:40 AM PST

Saab PhoeniX Concept Saab PhoeniX 1

If you didn’t believe that Saab is fully back on its feet again, here’s the proof! They’ve created this awesome concept to say that not only they’re back in business, they’re more powerful than ever. Thanks to Spyker.

The Saab PhoeniX Concept revealed at Geneva Motor Show is inspired by the brand’s roots in aviation industry and introduces the 'aeromotional' design: a visual evocation of the aerodynamic design principles and passion for innovation that inspired the creators of Saab's first car, the iconic Ursaab.

The aerospace inspiration is clear to see with the jet canopy-inspired glasshouse. This design has an exceptionally low drag co-efficient of just 0.25cd and also explores the potential for airflow management through the use of distinctive, side-mounted 'winglets'. The 2+2 cabin also features butterfly doors and has a minimalist, 'stripped out' feel, including a new expression of Saab's driver-focused layout and a world debut for Saab's innovative IQon infotainment and communications system.

The Phoenix is based on a new architecture which will underpin the next Saab 9-3 model. Its design and technical features will inspire future models as well.

The car’s is powered by a hybrid system with an electrically-driven rear axle mated to a sophisticated 200 hp, 1.6-litre petrol turbo engine driving the front wheels. That makes it an all-wheel-drive with projected eco figures of 56.5 mpg and 119 g/km CO2.

Saab PhoeniX Concept Saab PhoeniX 2

More details on the Saab Phoenix concept provided in the press release below:

Aeromotional design

The PhoeniX's 'aeromotional' design theme is inspired by Saab's aviation roots and draws expression from Ursaab, the prototype designed by aircraft engineers that spawned Saab's first generation of cars.

The entire form of the PhoeniX is seemingly moulded by the wind. Tightly-wrapped by a liquid-like skin, the teardrop cabin resembles a dark ice block and appears to erupt from the center of the muscular bodywork. Two prominent ripples flow along the hood into the disguised windshield pillars, as if barely able to contain a powerful structure underneath.

At the rear, the dark screen also bursts through the outer skin of the rear deck, The tapering form hints at the teardrop rear styling of Ursaab, while the 'sawn off', kamm tail echoes a form from Saab's first coupé, the Sonett.

The low, frontal styling features a stretched interpretation of Saab's signature three-port grille. A body-colored central wing is now dominant and, in keeping with the car's minimalist design, LED headlamps are almost invisibly located at its tips. The new grille and bonnet forms are among the styling themes likely to be seen in future Saab production cars.

Butterfly-opening doors provide enhanced access to the low-slung cabin. There are no visible door handles or mirrors to disrupt airflow, and small cameras on slim stalks provide rearward vision.

Roof-mounted 'winglets' enable PhoeniX to cleave the air as efficiently as possible. They channel airflow from the side of the car and direct it across the rear deck, reducing lift forces for greater stability without increasing drag.

Minimalist interior

In true Scandinavian tradition, the 2+2 cabin adopts a clean, minimalist look. It has the 'stripped out' feel of a competition car, with shell-like seats and metalised interior sections that mimic the exposed network of a rollover cage.

Fresh expression is given to Saab's traditional, driver-focused instrument layout. A circular pod in front of the driver, shaped like the afterburner of a jet engine, presents data in tandem with the head-up display.

Angled at 45º to the driver, a separate module accommodates Saab's advanced IQon infotainment and communications system. For good ergonomics, the 8-inch colour touch screen is as close to the driver's finger tips as the steering wheel.

Saab IQon (see separate release for full details) is a ground-breaking car communications platform using Google’s AndroidTM operating system. Based on pioneering 'open innovation' with third-party service providers and applications developers, it comprises an embedded computer platform which seamlessly connects to the internet when the car's ignition is switched on. The touch-screen provides access to audio and entertainment streaming, online navigation, on-board music storage and smartphone-like downloading of applications.

Red illumination for all instrument and ambient cabin lighting brings warmth and emotion to the cabin. This includes the floor, where LED light tubes are exposed by perforations in the black carpeting. It is all part of the new 'aeromotional' design strategy, incorporating 'fire and ice' effects.

The PhoeniX's curvaceous rear deck disguises a deep-opening tailgate. It gives access to a flat cargo deck, including fold-flat rear seatbacks and a cargo track for adaptable load carrying.

Efficient propulsion

Under its sculpted bonnet and beneath its cargo deck, the PhoeniX advances Saab's rightsizing powertrain strategy. Its propulsion system combines a highly efficient, 1.6-litre turbo engine driving the front wheels with innovative, electric rear wheel drive technology.

The compact, all-aluminum petrol engine produces 200 hp (147 kW) and includes variable valve timing and lift control, as well as start/stop functionality, minimal parasitic losses and a fuel cut-off function. A stainless steel tank is fitted, which is lighter and less expensive than a conventional plastic design,

The engine is supported by Saab's innovative eXWD system. It comprises a rear drive unit housing a 25 kW (34 hp) electric motor/generator powered by a small battery pack. Regenerative braking is used to sustain the battery's charge.

Currently under development for the next generation of Saab cars, this hybrid propulsion system enables the benefits of all-wheel-drive while also reducing fuel consumption. Using a six-speed manual transmission, projected combined cycle fuel economy and CO2 emissions are 56.5 mpg and 119 g/km.

The driver can select one of three eXWD operating modes. The default Eco mode delivers optimal fuel and CO2 efficiency with power assistance to reduce load on the petrol engine at low speeds; Sport mode includes maximum power assistance with torque vectoring across the rear axle for greater chassis control; and Traction mode enables optimal grip at take-off and in slippery conditions.

Inside and out, the Saab PhoeniX showcases new design directions and technologies that will be part of forthcoming Saab products.

Gumpert Tornante Unveiled Gumpert Tornante 1

2011 Geneva Motor Show is the place for German supercar maker Gumpert to unveil the new model. It’s called the Gumpert Tornante and it’s designed and developed by Touring Superleggera coachbuilders.

Now its not exactly a looker, but compared to the Gumpert Apollo it does look good. While Gumpert makes sure the Tornante is fast and brutal, Touring works on the car’s elegance, more passengers and luggage space, improved comfort, access and ventilation, and noise reduction.

The Tornante is powered by a lightweight V8 biturbo engine that is mated to a automatic six-speed transmission to get the best out of it. It has a nominal output of 700 PS and 900 nm of torque. The car gets Michelin Pilot Super Sport front 265/35 ZR19, back 345/30 ZR20 to ensure safety and performance for top speed in excess of 300 km/h.

For more technical details on the Tornant refer to the press release after the pictures.

Press Release:

Architecture
The space frame chassis is a derivative of the apollo and features the same central engine layout. However, the requirements of accessibility and inner space have dictated a number of important changes to the rolling chassis:
- the lateral member of the chassis is lowered by 80 mm in the door area
- the A pillar and the windshield are rotated vertically by 2.5°
- the B pillar is moved backwards with 100 mm allowing for 1120 mm wide gull-wing doors
- the H point is displaced by 210 mm in height and 46 mm in length
- the overall height is now 1215 mm
Thanks to the thorough frame engineering, the outstanding combination of lightness and torsional stiffness of the original chassis is preserved. The engineers target 100 kg and slightly lower than 40.000 Nm/degree, but the passenger compartment volume is now increased by 25% and the luggage compartment capacity is brought to 200 l.

Other modifications aim at enhanced ride comfort and driveability:
- the floor height is increased by 20 mm
- the shell seats are fully adjustable, heated, with 4-point belts
- the paddle shifters are standard feature
- sound and heat insulation material is fitted on the floor and between the cabin and the engine compartment
- glasses are double layer for better heat and noise insulation
- the ventilation system capacity is improved
A crash box in the front section, adapted from Formula-1 technology, absorbs the impact energy in case of a crash, improving the passive safety. Featuring composite body panels over the light chrome-molybdenum steel space frame with carbon fibre monocoque, the construction principle mirrors the original method patented by TOURING in 1936, and authorizes the symmetrical Superleggera badges on the bonnet.

Design
Unlike other TOURING creations, the Tornante is not rooted into a specific model of the Italian designer’s heritage. Aesthetically, the project started from a white sheet of paper, allowing the designer's full and free focus on the challenging package of the rolling chassis and its hard points. The new model should not only offer ample performance and superb dynamic properties and aerodynamics, but also adequate levels of comfort, interior space and ergonomics.

The spirit of a true dream car, but with sufficient practical features to become a safe and useable sports car in today’s traffic.
The TOURING accent of the Tornante originates from specific proportions and the balance of muscular elegance and introvert power, rather than formal language. The bodywork preserves its movement even when the car stands still, and when on the move, it expresses unique, elegant fluidness.
The prominent grille within the balanced front wings characterizes the Tornante's front area. The air intakes are pronounced, reflecting the care given to the air intake surface and the overall airflow.
The well-defined waistline reflects the functional separation between the greenhouse and the lower body. The top is a light area offering extended space for driver and passenger, overall visibility and sportive but comfortable 'life on board'. The muscular, though elegant shoulders announce the stunning performance of the power unit. Both the Tornante's doors and the boot lid open with gull-wing movement, providing easy access to the interior, the mechanics and the luggage compartment.
From the rear, the low quarter panels outline the powerful curve of the roof. Below the waistline, the very visible air diffuser evokes the research of the maximal downforce.

The overall design breaths superior potential and performance in an elegant and slightly understated way, faithful to the TOURING tradition.
Press Release March 1st 2011

Power Unit
The Tornante has the genes of the GUMPERT apollo and inherits its impressive V8 biturbo engine. Weighing only 196 kg, the engine plays a major role in ensuring the ideal weight and the fascinating driving dynamics of the Tornante.

An angle of 90° between the two cylinder banks is a sign of a classic 8-cylinder engine.
Starting from the pure block from Audi, the engine is a complete in-house development. Thus, the manufacturing process contains among others all the moving parts, air and fuel management, turbo chargers, charge air-duct and dry sump lubrication. In the basic version this engine delivers 700 HP. In comparison to the apollo, the configuration will be optimized for the Fast Touring mission. This means more comfort and more suitability for daily use.
Alongside the V8 power unit, an alternative powered Tornante is also planned for 2012.
Driveline The fully synchronised, automatic six-speed transmission guarantees efficient utilization of the remarkable energy at the back wheels. The arrangement of the gears in a longitudinal direction in the path of travel ensures a very low centre of gravity and optimum weight distribution.

Extremely short gearshifts up to 40 milliseconds (torque-to-torque) are provided by the precise TT40e transmission of the apollo, where “e” stands for electronic gear system. Gear changes are faster thanks to rocker switches on the steering wheel. The Formula 1-type technology promises the ultimate in comfort along with best driving performance.

Suspension
The apollo derived built-in suspension ideally complements the body's sophisticated aerodynamics. The Tornante owes the finely tuned sensitivity of the suspension system and the optimised exertion of power to its double transverse control arm pushrod configuration at front and rear.
The double wishbones ensure that the tires maintain optimum contact to the road surface, independently of the bound rate of suspension system. As the suspension elements are linked to the main frame, the system ensures a responsive reaction and precise handling.

Chassis
Made of top-quality and highly stable chrome-molybdenum-steel with an integrated safety cell, the round tube frame is the base and symbolic backbone of the Tornante. Providing additional space and comfort for its passengers compared to the apollo, the Tornante will be as safe as its racetrack-dedicated brother is. The Tornante succeeds in combining low weight and rigidity with finest driving dynamics and comfortable Fast Touring.

Toyota FT 86 II Concept Toyota FT 86 II Concept 1

Toyota unveiled a new edition of the FT-86 sportscar concept at the Geneva Motor Show. The FT-86 II gets one step closer to the production model that is due in 2012 The car is jointly developed by Toyota and Subaru.

The car is ought to being back Toyota’s long lost sporty spirit. It’s been a while since last Toyota has come up with a proper sporty machine. They killed cars like the Supra and Celica to focus on small eco cars. But the FT-86 is supposed to change that.

The FT-86 II is similar to the previous version, but it’s updated in places. The low, highly aerodynamic bodyshell is stretched tight over the engineering hard points, with the muscular bodywork rendered as compact as possible. The concept measures 4,235mm long, 1,795mm wide and 1,270mm high, with a long, 2,570mm wheelbase.

Toyota says the new sportscar will use a free-revving boxer petrol engine with a compact and lightweight six-speed manual transmission. They will focus on performance through lightness and precision rather than big wasteful engines. Both the powertrain and the driving position have been set as low and as far back as possible to optimise balance for maximum poise, high-speed stability and agility. With a front-engine/rear-wheel drive configuration, this gives the car lively, accessible performance that is easy to harness and enjoy.

We have to wait for the finished product to see if this solution actually works for this type of car.

Carbon fiber parts on this car include front skirt, rear skirt, windscreen frame cover, red air scoops, engine bonnet or even the mirrors. The car also gets ABT BR in 20 or the CR Superlight in 19 inch size.

With the same red and black leather treatment for the interior the car really looks pretty awesome. Other features of it include red safety belts and illuminated door sill, sports steering wheel, the centre console, the shifting gate and parts of the door panels in red carbon.

Then there’s the engine. The V10 engine of the R8 Spyder which has been upped from 525 hp to a massive 620 HP (456 kW). That means the performance is now even more astonishing than before . 0 to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 320 km/h.

ABT Audi A6 2011 abt audi a6 1

At the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, ABT released its latest packages for Audi A6 and R8. Here we take a look at the tuned sedan, which gets upgraded TDI and TFSI engines and some visual tweaks.

ABT provides you with good power packages whether you go for the diesel or petrol engines. For the 3.0 liter TDI they offer a  high-torque and cultivated 282 HP (207 kW) instead of the series standard 245 HP (180 kW) as base. If you want more you should go for the S package that has 310 HP (228 kW) plus 610 Nm of torque.

Petrol powered V6 will enjoy a full 410 HP or 302 kW instead of the standard’s 300 HP / 221 kW.

Apart form the mechanical upgrades, ABT Audi A6 also benefits from a light and discrete body kit including a rear skirt with the typical four tailpipes, rear spoiler, side skirts and front spoiler. We quite like the rims on this particular car, but you have different choices here as 19 to 21 inch wheels and, of course, in combination with fitting high-speed tyres.

Mazda Minagi Concept In Details mazda minagi geneva 1

As the new Minagi Concept car goes on display at the Geneva Motor Show, Mazda released more details on this crossover vehicle that is the the replacement for the CX5.

The car uses a full range of Mazda's SKYACTIV technologies –from powertrains to chassis and body and its design is based on the new KODO language Mazda has adopted for future models. Apart from a few small details, the Minagi looks virtually production ready.

In Japanese, its name conjures up the image of an object pulsating with energy and perfectly reflects the vehicle’s speed, agility and spirited character.

the Minagi is one of Mazda’s highlights at the Geneva Motor Show. The others include SHINARI Concept, SKYACTIV Technologies and MX-5 Special Edition Spring 2011.

Exterior design

  • The vehicle’s crouched stance expresses the image of a cheetah as it stands with its weight poised on its hind legs, ready to lunge at its prey
  • The cargo bay of conventional SUVs often resembles a vehicle wearing a backpack, whereas Minagi presents an image of a muscular entity that cleanly incorporates spaciousness within well-toned lines
  • Placing the A-pillar rearward emphasizes the rearward orientation of the cabin. This stands in sharp contrast to the single-arc silhouette of frontward A-pillar placement on minivans, and emphasizes the driving position – a priority for the design of the Mazda Minagi concept
  • The cabin’s position relative to the lower body is further back than on conventional SUVs. This emphasizes the motion expressed in Minagi’s form

Front view

  • The chromed ‘signature wing’ on the front fascia, shared with Shinari, makes Minagi immediately recognizable as a Mazda and creates a strong impression
  • Angling the front grille slightly downwards, while juxtaposing the headlamp housings design to slant upward, creates intensity
  • Adding more dynamic contours to the prominent front fenders – highly characteristic of Mazda cars – expresses KODO design language’s forceful sense of accumulating, then instantly releasing pent-up energy. These elements combine with the dynamic form of the rear fenders further emphasizing the wheels, which form the legs of this predator

Side view

  • Sculpted lines along the sides of Mazda Minagi’s body accentuate a sense of power which suggest the supple strength of a cheetah. These contours extend and connect with the rear fender in an expression which suggests the powerful musculature that joins the cheetah’s shoulders and hips to its legs
  • The overall effect is a graceful and beautiful form which directs the eye from front-to-rear
  • The character line that flows along the lower part of Minagi’s side panels symbolizes KODO’s sense of power being accumulated, then quickly released

Rear view

  • The rear fenders project boldly outward to create a wide, stable stance befitting an SUV
  • The contrast between the rear fenders and the taut lines of the car’s rear end mimics the strong and seductive hip line of a toned athlete

Headlamp design

  • As with Shinari, the chromed ‘signature wing’ that sweeps up from the bottom of the front grille disappears into the center of the headlamp housings dramatically
  • The design of the three-dimensional headlamp and rear combination lamps add a heightened sense of depth
  • The line of the ‘signature wing’ element and the headlamp design combine to express the intense look of a wild animal’s gaze

Interior design

  • Mazda’s designers set out to realize a driver-focused cockpit and cabin environment that expresses a reassuringly high level of strength and solidity. The interior employs quality materials along with the superior fit and finish of detailed hand craftsmanship
  • The above features add to the anticipation of the driving pleasure to come by creating a refined and quality cabin environment
  • The main black interior colour is highlighted by the colour red in the rear seatbacks and at the bottom of the door armrests

Characteristics unique to a compact crossover SUV

  • Four upright satin chrome struts appear to support the instrument panel, each rising upward in an image of vertical strength which appears to defy gravity, underscoring the impression that Minagi’s occupants are securely protected
  • The design of the instrument cluster and surrounding switches emphasizes the snug, sporty nature of the driver-focused cockpit while expressing Mazda’s sporty ethos

Craftsmanship

  • Leather seats and door trim have been fashioned using the finest leather available
  • Skilled craftsmen have carefully sewn the striking raised pleats, a touch that expresses the interior’s high level of quality
  • The ‘black smoked’ coating on the dark tinted horizontal metal panel – positioned along the center of the instrument panel – shows the high quality of the interior components
  • Solid metal components, including the door handles, are milled from solid aluminium and carefully polished to provide a smooth, quality-enhancing surface. The door levers are designed to resemble the beauty and functionality of high-end racing bicycle components, and provide a level of quality that ensures they are a pleasure to use

Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 Video

Here’s the first official video of the new Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 brought to you courtesy of Motortrend. The pictures of the car looked awesome, but this video shows the real beauty of this mad Italian hyper car. But unless you see the car up close in person you won’t fully get it! Yes, the new Lambo is much more sophisticated and technical than before, but that doesn’t mean any of that lunacy that made Lamborghinis so great is lost. It still looks like an 8-year-old’s wet dream with that Reventon-style body and 700 hp V12 engine and 350 km/h top speed. This car is one of the all time greats.

Giugiaro Volkswagen Concepts Tex and Go

Giugiaro Volkswagen Concepts Tex and Go Italdesign tex go 1

Italdesign Giugiaro unveiled their two new concept cars for Volkswagen, designed for this year’s Geneva Motor Show, called Tex and Go!. The two prototypes are the Giugiaro’s interpretation for VW’s future design.

The concepts include a sporty coupe and a functional MPV, both designed for urban use, potentially Volkswagen’s future A0 segment cars. They are base don the modular transverse architecture (MQB= Modularer Quer-Baukasten) platform. The first production models based on this architecture will emerge next year.

In future this architecture will indeed be able to house an electrical plug-in system, a hybrid system, a classical internal combustion engine powered by petrol, diesel, LPG, CNG and even hydrogen fuel cells without distinction.

The Go! is an electric car powered by VW’s Blue-e-motion electric drivetrain, while the plug-in Twïn Drive hybrid is fitted on the Tex. Thanks to these technologies, the two prototypes guarantee performance ever-attentive to the environment. The Go! is able to travel 240 km at zero emissions, while the Tex can run 35 km in electric mode.

The Tex features four real seats, front wheel drive and a gently aggressive line. The car has a very compact size and is very low (1355 mm in height) and 1750 mm wide and also gets 19-inch wheels. Its set-up is that of a classic two-door coupé whose clearly sporty personality is emphasised by an aggressive front and its rear flaunting two spoilers.

The front is distinguished by a slender grille that encloses the light clusters in an unprecedented trapezoidal shape and three air intakes in the bumper/spoiler zone, necessary for cooling the brake discs and 1.4-litre turbo engine. The VW badge sits in the centre of the grille and is optically underscored by the V-shaped groove of the bonnet. Windscreen and roof are a single piece of glass that becomes dark electronically.

Its performance is that of a pure sports car. The Tex is able to reach 100 km/h from a standstill in about 6 seconds, and reach a top speed of 220 km/h.

The Go! is a hatchback boasting a total length of 3990 mm thanks to its smaller overhangs. The battery pack is housed underneath the front and rear seating positions. This vertical package allows for the Go! a weight distribution of 58% on the front and 42% on the rear.

An electronically driven system pushes the door outwards and pulls it back parallel to the vehicle body for gaining access to the rear seats. This mechanism, which draws on the one used on the VW Milano Taxi (presented in May 2010), offers the advantageous practicality of sliding doors but without sacrificing their section (room is found inside for a comfortable armrest) and makes it possible to do away with the unattractive tracks on the body typical of this solution.
