Video: Ferrari FF Flies To Top Of Plan De Corones

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 11:15 AM PST

Alright, so a couple of helicopters helped the FF to get up there, but Ferrari has waxed lyrical so much about this car’s 4RM all-wheel-drive system that one would think the chopper is a bit show-offy and the car could simply drive its way up!

Why Plan De Corones in in the Dolomites at 2,350 metres above sea level you may ask? Well, in a few days Ferrari will invite a selected group of world media to go there and try the FF for the first time. And since this model is more about rough terrain versatility than track performance, they set the event up at the start of the vast ski area, where the journalists will test the cars under fierce conditions.

The cars have been taken to this area, which can only be reached by the ski-lifts, with a CH-47 Chinook transport helicopter from Viterbo’s 1st Regiment Antares and the help of three Agusta 205 helicopters from the 4th Regiment Altair from the Italian air force in Bolzano.

Fiat 500 Prima Edizione Delivery Begins fiat 500 prima

Delivery of Mexican-built Fiat 500 Prima Edizione kicks off across America celebrating official return of the Fiat brand to the United States. The Prima Edizione is a limited edition for Fiat enthusiasts.

exclusive features of the Fiat 500 Prima Edizione include three colors: Bianco, Rosso and Grigio (Gray). These limited-edition Fiat 500 models are equipped with a manual transmission. Designed as a collector vehicle, each Prima Edizione will feature a sequentially numbered vehicle identification number (VIN) and unique numbered matching badge on the instrument panel.

As mentioned, this car is only reserved for Fiat enthusiasts. In July 2010, Fiat fans attending the Club Fiat-Lancia Unlimited annual convention in North Carolina were given the opportunity to place reservations and select their vehicle build number for the unique Prima Edizione model.

“We are delighted to begin delivering the highly-anticipated Fiat Cinquecento Prima Edizione models to our cherished Fiat fans,” said Laura Soave, Head of Fiat Brand North America. “We value their unwavering loyalty and are thrilled that we now can show our appreciation by delivering the Prima Edizione models. The Prima Edizione marks the exciting and long-awaited return of the Fiat brand and true Italian automotive design to North America.”

The first customer to take delivery of his 500 PE was Shaun Folkerts, 38, a former environmental consultant and now stay-at-home dad, drove today from his home in southeastern Pennsylvania to take delivery of his Prima Edizione at Fiat of Gaithersburg, a Fiat Studio in Maryland in the metro Washington D.C. area.

“I’ve been waiting almost 28 years for this model to arrive, so I would drive anywhere, anytime for this Fiat 500,” an elated Folkerts said.

Folkerts’ first car as a teenager was a Fiat Spider “and I’ve never looked back.”

BMW 1M Coupe Online Configurator

BMW 1M Coupe Online Configurator 1m config

BMW launched a dedicated page in their website for online customization of the new 1M Coupe which can now be obtained for slightly over $46K. As much as we find online configurators pointless for high-end supercars, we found this one useful.

You see, for supercars these tools are just a toy for the fans, but because a much wider range of people can afford the 1M coupe this configurator can actually may become very handy for speccing up the car.

For now BMW only offers the 1M in Black Sapphire Metallic, Valencia Orange, and Alpine White exterior color, Black Boston Leather with orange stitching and BMW Individual Interior trim finishers Alcantara anthracite w/orange stitching. But there are two packages to customize the options. Each of these packages offer a bunch of features, but apparently you can’t customize them and gotta have the complete package even if you only want just one of the items! That’s a bit silly, but the packas are not that pricey and you can get them both to have a loaded car.

Video: Jay Leno Meets Iconic AC Roadster

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 10:24 AM PST

This new video by Jay Leno’s Garage features the Iconic AC Roadster, or the modern-day AC Cobra if you will. Jay gets to see the car at Boca Raton Concours d'Elegance in Florida and chats with the guy behind the project and his chief engineer. You might think this Roadster is another replica of the original AC, Jay did too, but it so isn’t! In fact it is a highly advanced machine featuring things that McLaren is using in their new supercar. This is by far the most sophisticated American car I’ve ever seen. They make the whole thing, including the Ford-based 850 hp 427 engine, in Detroit. That is very cool. Even if you are insane and don’t like this car check out the video. You’ll be amazed by its engineering goodness.

Video: Formula 1 Wishes Robert Kubica Well

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 09:59 AM PST

Thanks to Youtube Formula 1 drivers don’t have to actually go and visit Robert Kubica! They just send him the link to this video in which they wish him a speedy recovery. As I’m sure you know Kubica was injured badly in a rally crash a while back. He was attending the rally for fun to pick his spirit up ahead of the 2011 F1 season but he ended up with some broken bones and a year away from every kind of racing. But fans and his fellow racing drivers on the F1 grid won’t forget him and want to see him back on track ASAP.

Brabus Mercedes Viano iBusiness

Brabus Mercedes Viano iBusiness BRABUS iBusiness 1

Brabus has come up with a special iBusiness treatment – which used to exclusive to the S Class – for the Mercedes Viano van. This is by all means the ultimate van in the whole world!

Well, it looks like a hearse from the outside, but the interior beats all limousines in terms comfort, luxury and stuff to keep you amused. I mean short of adding a jacuzzi in there you cannot improve on it. They’ve created a mobile multimedia 3D cinema. That’s right, this must be the first car in the world to features a 3D display.

The lounge-like interior features a 40-inch Sony Bravia LED3D TV that’s hooked up to a digital TV receiver and a Playstation 3. Yes, there’s a couple of iPads around just because they’re fashionable! This car also offers lots of connectivity option with WiFi, UMTS and HSDPA so you are always connected on the road. The Viano iBusiness a geek’s wet dream!

You do also get Maybach-style reclining leather seats as well as full length curtains and all the dials and knobs you need to control the air con and stuff. There’s also a mini bar and a fridge.

This is probably the best car for transporting movie stars to and from the set. It is more convenient and a damn sight better equipped than those large RVs. Mind you, you celeb might run late since the Viano is powered by a CDI V6 ECO PowerXtra diesel engine that makes 318 HP (234 kW) and 410 Nm (302 lb-ft) of torque.  That’s not even enough to carry that big TV around!

You could solve that problem by ordering the car with the 426 HP (313 kW) and 621 Nm (458 lb-ft) of torque V8 engine.

The only problem we see with this car is that people who lie to have this level of luxury in their life, also like to show it off a bit. And a blacked-out van isn’t really what you call classy! Those people prefer the Roller Phantom or the Maybach. The only person we can think of who would like this Viano is Guy Ritchie who’s already got a kitted out van.

VW Polo WRC In The Works

VW Polo WRC In The Works vw polo gti

Sources close to the German manufacturer are reporting that Volkswagen is set for a full-on World Rally Championship campaign and they are preparing a WRC version of the Polo for the job.

VW apparently has been thinking of entering WRC since the new regulations for 1600cc engines announced. They must have become bored y winning Rally Dakar over and over again and want some new tougher challenge!

VW Polo WRC is reportedly under development by French engineer Francois-Xavier Demaison who’s worked with Peugeot, Citroen and Subaru. Another more familair name involved in the project is the Dakar winner Carlos Sainz.

VW is yet to reveal its driver lineup, but they’ve already talked with Sebastien Loeb who refused the offer. That shows how serious VW is about their WRC career. They’ve even made Skoda to abandon its WRC ambitions! Sources say former champion Petter Solberg is one of the candidates to drive the Polo WRC.

US-Spec Audi TT RS Gets More Power

US Spec Audi TT RS Gets More Power audi ttrs

Audi has been reluctant to send the high performance TT RS to the U.S. but now that the Facebook petitions convinced them to do so they decided to treat the Americans with a better version of the car!

Apparently the American TT RS will get 360 hp form its five-cylinder Turbo engine instead of the 340 that the European models have. That’s been achieved by using an updated software for the engine’s ECU. What effect that 20 more horses are going to have o the car’s performance?  Well not that big of an effect, but just knowing that your car has more power than what they get in Europe is cool!

What’s more the US-Spec car benefits from various styling kits and visual tweaks such as blacked-out grille. That’s not saying much because Europeans get them too. What they get and Americans won’t are the Recaro seats and the optional DSG transmission. The US model only gets a six-speed manual. The car can also be fitted with sport exhausts for a deeper noise.

Official specs and pricing of the car are yet to be confirmed.

Video: 2012 Mustang Boss 302 Laps Laguna Seca

Posted: 10 Mar 2011 05:49 AM PST

MotorTrend recently set about answering the question that’s been on the  lips of the nation for a while! Is the new Ford Mustang Boss 302 faster than a BMW M3 around the track? The answer is yes, quite a bit faster. Nearly 2.8 second faster to be precise around Laguna Seca circuit. Now one might argue that the Boss is a muscle car and the Bimmer a sporty coupe, but they’re both V8-engined with the same sort of power. Granted, the Boss 302 looks a bit vulgar compared to the M3, but the American is a helluva lot more fun to drive and it offers better value as well. Check out some nice footage of the Boss’ lap here.

Lamborghini Gallardo Tricolore

Lamborghini Gallardo Tricolore Lamborghini Gallardo Tricolore

This is the coolest thing about Lamborghini, they just put a stripe on their cars and hike the price! And people buy them just to get that stripe. Check out the new stripped special edition of the Gallardo called Tricolore.

Tricolore refers to the Italian flag on the car which hints at the purpose of this special version. It celebrates the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy. The car will be officially presented at the Stazione Futuro exhibition on March 16 in Turin.

Not much details available on the car’s specs and if it features more power than normal models or not, but who cares! What you want is that stripe and the great news is that it also runs inside the car on the driver’s seat. Apparently it only comes in white garnished with exposed carbon fiber parts. It also might be limited to 150 units to mark the anniversary.

Production Singer 911 Revealed

Production Singer 911 Revealed singer 911 1

Porsche 911 has become a very advanced machine, an engineering marvel. But in terms of style it’s gone backward. What you need is a Porsche that goes like the modern 911 but looks like the old one.

If only such a thing existed!

Yep, that’s the idea behind the Singer 911. They took the body of a vintage 911, tweaked its design a bit, and bolted on a modern underpinning they’ve borrowed from different new models.

The Singer 911 is no mere imitation, clone or retro-hot rod, but a re-interpretation and rebirth of the early performance-focused 911′s. The new vehicle is the result of a fusion between the purity of the original 911 and modern materials, design, and updated technologies, and aftermarket experience into a unique sports car that recaptures the essence of the early 911′s golden age. The Singer 911 capitalizes on the 40 years of solutions and enhancements that have resulted from the racing aftermarket’s embracing the original 911. Borrowing the best elements from the air/oil cooled 911′s long production span such as the “chic” of the long hood pre-’74 race specials, and the engineering durability of the later cars from the 80′s and 90′s, Singer Vehicle Design capitalizes on the vast know how and evolutionary advances the original 911 has enjoyed. The experience offered by the new Singer 911 is a passionate celebration of the history making, iconic 911, and creates an enhanced sportscar that honors the original 911′s soul.

Production Singer 911 Revealed singer 911 2

The end result is an awesome looking car that even those who don’t like the 911 can’t resist! The Singer Design 911 features a body that although looks like it belongs to 1960s, but is actually made of carbon fiber. The unibody structure and Smart Racing suspension components, such as multi-adjustable anti-roll bars, suspension bushing that help maintain correct geometry, mean that the Singer drives brilliantly as well. They wanted to capture the handling characteristic of the vintage model but with none of the drawbacks.

A Jerry Woods Enterprises electric/hydraulic power steering system is fitted to the Singer 911 that maintains the vital 911steering feel and feedback while helping quicken the steering reactions as compared to the original ZF rack and pinion.

Production Singer 911 Revealed singer 911 3

As for the engine, Singer 911 gets an air/oil cooled 911 engine from the 993. Thi s3.8 liter unit also benefits from components belonging to newer 911s, for instance the 103mm pistons and cylinders, the 76.4mm crankshaft of the 997 GT3.

That’s not important. What matters is that it makes 425 hp and 340 lbs. ft. of torque sent to the rear wheels using a a nearly indestructible six-speed G50 transaxle that has been revised with a close ratio cogs, and a limited slip differential. It goes from 0 to 60 in 3.9 seconds, 0 to 100mph in 8.5 seconds, and exceeds a top speed of 170 mph.

Production Singer 911 Revealed singer 911 4

The Singer 911 is equipped with competition-proven Brembo calipers (4-pot) and rotors that are derived from the 917 and 930 models. The brakes will be peeking out from behind period-evoking Zuffenhaus, lightweight, five-spoke, three-piece forged aluminum wheels. The 17 x 9-inch front wheels are wrapped in sticky, modern Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires measuring 225/45/17 and the rear 17 x 11-inch wheel wears 275/40/17 rubber.

Production Singer 911 Revealed singer 911 5

The Singer 911 prototype is finished in vintage-appearing Singer Racing Orange. Other colors will be available to customers. In addition to the modern interpretation of the lightweight philosophy, the exterior will be updated with a uniquely designed HID headlamp arrangements that greatly improves exterior lighting.

Production Singer 911 Revealed singer 911 6

As for the interior, the Singer 911 features an original 911-style instrument cluster with all-new gauges set in a revised dash panel. The Singer 911 interior is not carpeted in keeping with the traditional feel of the spartan race-focused 911′s (R, ST, and RSR) but will be trimmed in supple dark racing green leather. Thin, lightweight but effective sound deadening measures controls interior noise while still maintaining the aural persona of the early 911′s. A re-engineered vintage 911 Recaro seat uses structural carbon fiber in addition to offering fully electric operation and premium leather surface covering.

Finally, no vintage, performance focused interior would be complete without a MOMO steering wheel and the Singer 911 features a new interpretation of the company’s classic ‘Monza’ wheel.
