Video: A Day In Ferrari Town

Posted: 15 Mar 2011 11:40 AM PDT

Maranello is to be honest is a rubbish city as far as living standards go. But every petrolhead would kill to live there and if you are wondering why, just check out this video!

Youtubist Marchettino recently spent some time in Maranello and in just one day he spotted a large collection of old and new Ferrari models. That’s not astonishing, after all Ferrari’s factory and the Fiorano test track is located in there and as we know Ferrari is allowed to drive test and even race cars across town to the track. What makes this city so great is the amazing scenery and soundtrack these Ferraris give it. Imagine waking up to the sound of a 458′s V8 and go bad with the 599′s V12 singing across the street.

Granted, you might get migraine after a while, but it’s worth it!

Video: 2012 Audi A6 ‘Manipulation’ Commercial

Posted: 15 Mar 2011 10:56 AM PDT

With the new TV spot for the 2012 A6, Audi gets all technical and boasts the car’s high-tech lightweight aluminium hybrid body. Going with the theme ‘Engineered with a lighter touch’ this ad shows a man shaping the car’s body shell from aluminum with his hands! It is really cool indeed, but it could mean different things to different people. An engineer for instance will be amazed by Audi’s sophistication and technology, but normal people specially older generation are going to think this car is not strong enough when they see the man forming body panels with hand! They have to be careful where they air this ad.

China First To Get BMW 5 Series Hybrid bmw 5 sereis hybrid

Norbert Reithofer, BMW CEO, confirmed today during the firm’s Annual Accounts Press Conference that his company will introduce a new NEV(New Energy Vehicle) 5 Series in China. That is the plug-in hybrid version of the long wheelbase 5er for the Asian country.

"A highlight at the Shanghai Motor Show in mid-April will be the presentation of our New Energy Vehicle," Reithofer said. "This model will be our e-car from China for China – a long version of the BMW 5 Series as a plug-in hybrid. This car will benefit from the strength and the excellent reputation of the BMW brand."

That’s all the details they’ve provided so far! But based on what we know from BMW 5 Series ActiveHybrid, the powertrain might be consisting of the firm’s 300 PS turbocharged in-line six-cylinder 3.0 liter petrol unit and a 50 PS electric motor. The NEV might upgrade those number a little bit and finally confirm its official economy figures.

More details will be released closer to 201 Shanghai Motor Show.

Shocker! Mazda MX 5 Named UKs Best Convertible mx5 best convertible

21 years after its launch in the UK, the lovely Mazda MX-5 is still by far and away the most popular roadster in UK, the country that practically invented roadsters. The car has just been named ‘Best Convertible’ by CarBuyer in its inaugural 'Car of the Year' awards.

The MX-5 beat the short-listed models from Porsche, Audi, Peugeot and Volvo to claim the convertible crown, scoring 4.6 stars out of 5 (judged by website visitors and the experts from Auto Express, Evo and Octane magazines). Sure there are prettier, faster and even more affordable alternatives, but as a package the MX-5 is pretty much unbeatable. It offers an enormous amount of fun, decent amount of kit, extraordinary reliability and a cool image, all at a reasonable price.

In fact affordability is the reason why it’s so popular. It is the world's best-selling two-seater roadster and has recorded over 100,000 sales in UK.

This spring, the regular 10-strong Mazda MX-5 model range, which is priced from £17,975 to £23,205 (OTR), is boosted by the arrival of two special editions.  These new models, called the Mazda MX-5 Kendo, are available in two versions – the 1.8i Kendo soft-top priced at £19,255 (OTR) and the more powerful 2.0i Kendo Roadster Coupe with the world's fastest folding powered roof (up or down in 12 seconds), costing £22,320 (OTR).  The new model is named after 'The way of the Sword' – a modern Japanese martial art and features unique premium specification including stone leather interior, tinted alloy wheels and chrome exterior accents. Available in two new exterior colours Sparkling Black Mica, and new to Mazda in the UK, the premium-looking Dolphin Grey Mica.

Commenting on the Mazda's success, the CarBuyer judges stated, "The Mazda MX-5 reins supreme as the ultimate drop top choice.  With a soft-top model, the clever folding hard-top Roadster Coupe and even an automatic option, there is something for everyone – and the tiny two-seater is great fun to drive.

"Cars that are this much fun rarely make so much sense.  The latest MX-5 has a racy new look to match the rest of the Mazda 2011 line-up and comes with attractive prices.  Build quality is brilliant and reliability first rate, while the 1.8 and 2.0 engines provide just the right amount of performance.  Best of all, this sporty roadster is no bone-shaker, so it's as comfortable as it is good to drive."

Video: Lexus LFA Playing at Infineon Raceway

Posted: 15 Mar 2011 10:06 AM PDT

Looks like somebody doesn’t care about his Lexus LFA’s pricey rear tires! This video filmed at Infineon Raceway shows NASCAR champ Scott Pruett fooling around burning the rubber off the Japanese supercar’ wheels. The action includes some nice powerslides and a couple of crazy donuts. And yes you can hear the LFA’s V10 howling like a wounded animal. Who knows, maybe this car too is sad about what’s currently going on in his homeland, what his people are going through … earthquake, tsunami, several nuclear explosions … Stand tall Japan! You’ll emerge stronger.

Remember the Toyota iQ Disco Ball? Well, apparently someone else liked that idea too! Here’s the disco ball edition of the smart fortwo, prepared for a film called ‘Pixel City’.

This glitzy little smart, which by the way benefits from an electric drivetrain, is literally covered in mirrors. From the top of the roof to the hub caps. The windows too are obviously mirror finished. The car has been dreamed up by the experimental artist formation ‘Apparatjik’ and since smart is the official sponsor of the project, the fortwo got the glory.

This smart will also be a part of their live performances on the 26th and 27th of March, consisting of world-famous musicians Magne Furuholmen of a-ha, Guy Berryman of Coldplay, Jonas Bjerre of Mew and sought-after music producer Martin Terefe. Their “Apparatjik Light Space Modular” features not only concerts but also an interactive installation which collects data to be turned into a piece of music.

The deriving song will be performed by the prestigious Deutsches Kammerorchester and accompanied by a spectacular image show titled ‘Apparat TV’. The projections will be streamed out of a six metre tall cube into the city through the museum’s glass walls. Inside that cube is where Apparatjik will be performing live on 26 and 27 March.

The smart Disco Ball was also used by Apparatjik members Magne Furuholmen and Martin Terefe for a city tour of Berlin. Way to go!

Video: VW Golf Cabrio Commercial

Posted: 15 Mar 2011 07:53 AM PDT

The Spring is just around the corner and the weather is lustrous! So it’s the perfect time for Volkswagen to release a romantic commercial for the new Golf Cabrio. VW has always been good at making TV spots. Even when they use cliches it is still fascinating. Check out this Golf Cabrio ad, it shows you a young couple playing on the beach and cruising mountain roads in the Golf. That image is at least 70 years old, and yet it works. I mean I got half a mind buying the new Golf Cabrio watching this! And it’s a genuinely good car as we’ve explained before.

Panzani Design Jaguar S-Type

As if the Jaguar S-type was not ugly enough, an Italian company called Panzani Design set about making it intolerably hideous. It looks like the car has a disease!

The extreme modifications have totally revamped the looks of the S-Type. So much so that you would struggle to say it’s an old Jag at first glance. Not sure what they were thinking of while designing this, but it’s not pretty, exquisite, or even artsy-fartsy!

What boggles the mind most of all are those massively flared arches which are apparently inspired by classic cars. Those in combination with the totally new rear-end design have give the car a kinda classic Lancia sort of look at the back. But we wish they had redesigned the front-end as well!

As a matter of fact they did to some extent, but it’s for the worse. It’s like they wanted to make fun of S-Type’s funny face by giving it a creepy smile. Look at the front bumper for God’s sake!

The ingredients of the car are all good. Carbon fiber, leather, Alcantara, matte gray finish, they are all good stuff. But the way they put them together is a big fail. We really hope they never make it and it remains just a show car forever.

F1: Red Bull Animation Explains KERS and MRW

Posted: 15 Mar 2011 06:34 AM PDT

Red Bull released an animation of their Infiniti-sponsored 2011 car and hooked up driver Mark Webber to explain some of the new systems that’s introduced in F1 this season.

The first is KERS or Kinetic Energy Recovery System which is also used in some road-going cars and in essence saves the otherwise wasted energy of braking in form of electricity which can be used to either charge the batteries or boost the engine.

The other new feature is the MRW or Movable (adjustable) Rear Wing. It has a movable middle part than can be adjusted by the driver electronically, in order to change aerodynamics of the car for more speed, braking efficiency, or downforce.

Come to think of it, the drivers are no longer driving the car as such, so much as they’re keeping the computers that do the actual driving in check! Listen to Mr.Webber in the video above as he explain the features professionally.
