Range Rover Grand Evoque – Report

Posted: 21 Jun 2011 09:14 AM PDT

Range Rover Grand Evoque Report range rover grand evoque rendering

While the world is still waiting to see the first of the new Range Rover Evoque on the streets, news emerge that the company is thinking of a bigger version of the car to slot between the Evoque and the Sport.

This fourth model in Range Rover’s lineup could be called the Grand Evoque and would feature a more aggressive design than the base car, and it would also be larger and offer more interior space.

In other words, the Grand Evoque will be more family friendly, while its meaner, sportier looks would appeal to the younger buyers. It could very well be an alternative for the Range Rover Sport, for those who cannot afford it. According to the sources, the Grand Evoque will cost between £35k to £55k. The Sport starts at £55k.

The Grand Evoque will retain the normal Evoque’s coupe-like styling, but will get more dramatic lines and design features. That said, it has no intention of rivaling BMW X6. That must be the job for the next generation Range Rover Sport!

Under the skin, the Grand Evoque would be the same as the smaller sister to keep the costs down, and also get the same engines and drivetrain options with 2WD or 4WD as the Evoque.

2012 BMW M5 Online Visualizer Launched

2012 BMW M5 Online Visualizer Launched m5 visualizer

Finally, a chance to see the new M5 in a color other than the Monte Carlo Blue as BMW launches the online configurator for the car!

That said, don’t get too excited, because as you see in the picture the they only offer a bunch of rubbish colors fro the M5, and there’s still no matte option available. Maybe BMW is saving that for the upcoming special editions so they can charge you a whole lot more for $1000 worth of paint!

Inside the cabin you get six colors for the leather upholstery and three different interior trims. But no matter what you do with those colors, the cabin of the M5 still looks quite German and boring.

None of the visual features matter though, once you open the taps and that 4.4 liter biturbo V8 comes to life and unleashes 560 hp.

Porsche At 2011 Goodwood FoS

Porsche At 2011 Goodwood FoS porsche 2011 goodwood 1

This year Porsche will turn up at Goodwood with an awesome lineup of cars, including the new 911 Carrera GT3 Rs 4.0.

The road-going race car will be joined by the ultimate turbocharged 911, the 620 hp GT2 RS in the Supercar Run, while in the First Glance category, the 550 hp twin-turbo Panamera Turbo S will make its first public appearance. The Porsche Cayenne will also be in action at the Porsche Experience Centre Goodwood area, alongside a display celebrating 60 years of Porsche in the UK as well as showcasing the current Porsche range line-up.

One of the greatest highlights of Porsche’s lineup, and indeed the whole event, is the Semper Vivus ('always alive') of 1900 – with its electric wheel hub motors and petrol engine. Porsche Museum will also be bringing the fearsome 1,200 hp Porsche 917/30 to Goodwood, as well as the more recent all-wheel drive turbocharged 961 from 1986. The rare 718 F2 single seater from 1960 will also be demonstrated.

More details on the cars and Porsche’s other plans for 2011 Goodwood Fos can be found in the press release below:

Porsche Museum cars – ingenuity and racing success celebrated

The name Porsche has been associated with pioneering innovations in automotive engineering since the beginning of the last century. In 1900, Ferdinand Porsche, founding father of the present-day Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, entered unchartered territory. With the first functional, full hybrid car in the world, the Semper Vivus (‘always alive’), the principle of the serial hybrid drive had been born.

In a stunning four year project the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart has had the Semper Vivus recreated. This year, 111 years after this ground-breaking innovation by Ferdinand Porsche, the Semper Vivus will again drive into the limelight at Goodwood.

In the Seventies, Porsche began to explore turbocharging as a means to generate horsepower – and this research culminated in the phenomenal 917/30 Spyder in 1973.  Powered by a 5.3-litre flat-12 engine developing over 1,000 hp, the 917/30 was so successful in the American Can-Am racing series that the rules were changed at the end of the season to exclude it! Porsche factory driver Mark Donohue used the 917/30 to establish a closed-circuit speed record at the Talladega oval in Alabama – 220.98mph (355.85 km/h).

The 961 of 1986 is the only all-wheel drive Porsche ever to start at Le Mans, and was a racing version of the all-conquering 959 Rallye-Raid car. The 961 acted as a test-bed in the 24 Hours race for a flat-six, twin-turbo engine with water-cooled four-valve cylinder heads, but was fast enough to finish seventh overall and win its class.

Although indelibly associated with sports car racing, Porsche has enjoyed success at the very pinnacle of motorsport in Formula 1. In the early 1960s, Porsche developed its 718 RSK Spyder into a single-seater. Powered by a four cylinder, four camshaft 'boxer' engine, the 718 Formula 2 car won the equivalent of the F2 Manufacturers' World Championship in 1960, driven by top drivers of the day including Stirling Moss, Graham Hill and Jo Bonnier. The following year, the car performed so well it was successfully used in Formula 1 races.

Latest Porsche supercars in action

The Supercar Run is a prime attraction at the Festival of Speed, showcasing the fastest and most exclusive road-going sports cars. This year's event will mark the debut of the latest Porsche 911 GT3 RS, which arrives in UK showrooms in July. With a 500 hp 4.0-litre version of the proven Porsche flat-six engine, lower weight and a chassis optimised to an even higher standard, the new GT3 RS 4.0 can lap the Nürburgring-Nordschleife circuit in Germany in 7 min 27 secs.

For many years, Porsche RS models have set the foundation for homologating the racing version of the 911. The 911 GT3 RS 4.0 celebrates the unparalleled racing record of Porsche and continues the series of absolute, uncompromised, motor sport-oriented editions of the 911 that are homologated for road use and which can trace their roots back to the classic Carrera RS 2.7 of 1973.

The 911 GT2 RS is the fastest and most powerful road-going sports car ever built in the history of Porsche. With a power-to-weight ratio of 452 hp / tonne, by far the best in class, the GT2 RS marks the summit in the 911 range.

First Glance debut for Panamera Turbo S

The latest addition to the Panamera range of Gran Turismo sporting saloons, the new Turbo S offers a unique combination of performance and efficiency, driving dynamics and comfort. The 4.8-litre, V8 twin-turbocharged engine delivers 550 hp, an increase of ten per cent or 50 hp more than the Panamera Turbo. The increased performance compared with the Panamera Turbo can be attributed to two main enhancements; improved turbochargers with titanium-aluminium turbine wheels and modified engine control management.

Dynamic Cayenne demonstrations at the Porsche Experience Centre Goodwood

The driver-oriented chassis of the Porsche Cayenne has been designed to combine sports car handling on the road with the added versatility of being able to cover ground quickly, regardless of the terrain.

Visitors to the Festival of Speed will be able to experience Porsche power personally courtesy of Driving Consultants from the Porsche Experience Centre at Silverstone, who will be demonstrating the performance and handling of the Cayenne on a specially designed dynamics course laid out in the Porsche Experience area at Goodwood. The grass-surfaced course around which the 400 hp V8-engined Cayenne S models will power is intended to demonstrate perfectly the outstanding dynamic ability of this immensely versatile Porsche.

At selected times during the Festival, a rally-prepared 911 will also take to the dynamic stage at the Porsche Experience Centre Goodwood, underlining the broad sporting ability of the iconic coupe.

Sixty years celebration

At the 1951 Earl's Court Motor Show, the first right-hand drive examples of the Porsche 356 made their UK debut. To celebrate the diamond jubilee of Porsche in the UK, a range of iconic Porsche road cars over the decades including an early 911 from the 1960s and the 928 GT from the 1980s will be on display at the Porsche Experience Centre Goodwood.

Look out for Porsche personalities and relax at the Café Le Mans

Porsche enthusiasts visiting Goodwood will be pleased to learn that there are many more examples of the marque, and former factory race drivers, participating in the Festival of Speed. Not least amongst these will be Richard Attwood, former F1 driver and 1970 Le Mans winner, who will be taking time out of his daily schedule as a Porsche Driving Consultant, at the Porsche Experience Centre Silverstone, to soak up the atmosphere and chat with fans.

For visitors wishing to refuel themselves, the Porsche Café Le Mans will be once more situated on the outside of the track near the footbridge, offering meals and refreshments throughout the weekend.

Follow all the Goodwood action on-line

Throughout the Festival of Speed weekend, Porsche Origin will be carrying films direct from Goodwood, along with news and updates of all the action.

Mercedes has not yet released an official video of their crack at the world drifting record, which resulted in it being smashed! Here’s a decent video of the action we found on Youtube, and as you can see this world record attempt seems like a walk in the park for Mercedes driver Mauro Calo in his C63 AMG. The rear tires tolerated 8 and half laps of sideways torture to cover a distance of 2308 metres.

74mpg Audi A1 1.6 TDI For UK

74mpg Audi A1 1.6 TDI For UK Audi A1 1.6 TDI 1

Audi announced a new, extremely frugal version of Audi A1, powered by a 1.6 liter TDI engine, which does 74.3 mpg and emits 99 g/km of Co2.

That means the car is exempted from road tax and the London congestion charge. And that means the the pricing of £14,480 to £17,865, (depending on the trim; SE, Sport and S line) is actually reasonable.

Alright, so the performance is a bit shabby, with zero to 62mph in 10.5 seconds, and top speed of 118mph, but if you want a fast A1 get the one with the turbo engine. This model is all about economy and it excels at it.

It is an expensive little car, but you do get a very decent amount of kit as standard with it. That includes engine start-stop function, energy recuperation, alloy wheels, air conditioning, single CD audio system with MP3 compatibility, ESP with latest differential lock system. SE, Sport and S line. Features common to all include alloy wheels, remote central locking, air conditioning, electric front windows and mirrors and a six-speaker single CD audio system with auxiliary iPod connection linked to a 6.5-inch retractable display.

2012 BMW M5 Official Video

Posted: 20 Jun 2011 11:48 PM PDT

Here’s your chance to see the all-new BMW M5 in action for the first time, and realize how 560 hp and 680 Nm actually sound like. We were hoping the video shows the car in some other color than Monte Carlo Blue, but apparently this is the official color for this car, just as Silver was the color of choice for the previous version. We’re glad that all the downsizing from V10 to V8, and all that EfficientDynamics trickery have not affected the M5′s magic. It is still one helluva beast!

Renault Megane 265 Trophy ‘Ring Record Video

A few days ago we told you about the new Renault Megane RS 265 Trophy setting a blistering lap time at the Nurburgring, breaking the record for front-wheel-drive cars. Here’s a video of the record-breaking run. The car performed brilliantly in the hands of Renault’s development driver Laurent Hurgon and managed a time of 8 minutes 8 seconds. This is going to be a great selling point for the new Megane RS. It will raise the bar for hot hatchbacks.

Wraps finally come off the new MINI Coupe, revealing a fantastic looking car that is all about driving fun and joy!

Alright, so maybe the red roof and stripes on this particular car make it look a bit sissy, but just imagine it in black. It’s a great piece of design. While the car has the obvious character of a MINI, it sits 52 mm lower and has a couple of unique designer touches that turn it into a sportscar.

You get the helmet-like roof design, sharply raked A-pillars, JCW aero kit, and an integrated rear spoiler that extends automatically at 80 km/h (50 mph). All these bits are not just for show, they also have aerodynamic purposes. MINI offers a wide range of color combination for this model.

Exterior dimensions:

Length: 3,734 millimetres (MINI Cooper Coupé: 3,728 millimeters)
Width: 1,683 millimetres
Height: 1,384 millimetres (MINI Cooper  Coupé: 1,378 millimetres)
Wheelbase: 2,467 millimetres

Like a true sportscar, the MINI Coupe is a two-seater with a decent sized boot with an extremely high-opening tailgate that makes loading easier. The car offers a good level of convenience and features for its size.

Interior design clearly emphasising two-seat layout; oval recesses in the roof liner provide extra headroom for the driver and front passenger; sports seats fitted as standard (MINI Cooper S Coupé, MINI Cooper SD Coupé, MINI John Cooper Works Coupé); two-piece luggage compartment cover in striking, three-dimensional design.

Some of the standard kit you get with the car include speed-sensitive power steering, electrically adjustable exterior mirrors, Park Distance Control, height-adjustable seats, air conditioning (MINI Cooper S Coupé, MINI Cooper SD Coupé, MINI John Cooper Works Coupé) and an audio system with MP3-compatible CD player and AUX IN connection as standard; optional equipment includes black headlight housing, xenon headlights, Adaptive Headlights, Comfort Access, automatic climate control, automatically dimming rear-view mirror and exterior mirrors, storage package, preparation for a rear luggage carrier rack, the John Cooper Works Pack and exclusive options from the  MINI Yours range; a variety of entertainment and communications functions unparalleled in the segment: Harman Kardon Hi-Fi loudspeaker system, Bluetooth mobile phone preparation, USB audio interface; innovative MINI Connected functions – including web radio, Google local search and Google Send to Car services, reception of RSS news feeds, plus in-car use of Facebook and Twitter – available in conjunction with the MINI Visual Boost radio or MINI navigation system.

The best thing about the Coupe however, is the way it goes. With a range of powerful petrol and diesel four-cylinder engines form BMW, and a fine-tuned chassis, you will be treated with a great level of driving fun every time you take the car out for a spin.

Despite being a front-wheel-drive car, it comes with a range of electronic systems such as Electric Power Steering and DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) as standard, DTC (Dynamic Traction Control) with EDLC (Electronic Differential Lock Control) optional (standard on MINI John Cooper Works Coupé), so it feels like a posh go kart on the road.

Here’s the details of each engine available for the 2012 MINI Coupe:
